Sarah Emery is a screenwriter based in Sydney. Often collaborating with writer / director Carl Firth, she writes high-concept genre fare, comedy and drama, which is sometimes dark, other times funny, and always grounded in reality. Sarah and Carl's most recent short film, Sleep Talker, won Best Australian Short Film and an Audience Choice Award at the Sydney Underground Film Festival (2021). The film also screened at ScreamFest, Telluride Horror Show, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, L'Étrange Festival and Nightstream. A feature version is currently in development. In addition, Sarah has also worked as a script editor, script coordinator, researcher and writers' assistant and was most recently the Script Editor on Netflix's reboot of Heartbreak High.
Before entering the film industry, Sarah worked extensively in theater and community arts. She was the Associate Director at Milk Crate Theater, Outreach Director at Shopfront Theater for Young People, and an Associate Artist at Heaps Decent. She has collaborated with juvenile justice centers, homeless services, mental health organizations and refugee groups to create theater and films inspired by real stories and lived experiences. This work has been presented at the Sydney Opera House, Luna Park, Darlinghurst Theater Company, Riverside Theater and Hazlehurst Regional Arts Gallery. In 2013, Sarah's contributions to the sector were recognized with the Australia Council for the Arts’ Kirk Robson Award.
